Founded in 1999, the G20 consists of the G7 countries (the U.S., Japan, Germany, the U.K., France, Italy, and Canada) and major economies such as China, India, Brazil, Russia, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Indonesia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the European Union (E.U.), and the African Union (A.U.). The G20 represents around 85% of the world's GDP and 75% of world trade. Therefore, the G20 is considered a mechanism with global influence, helping shape international standards and rules. Up to now, the G20 has organized 18 summit meetings.

This G20 Summit takes place in the context of the complicated and unpredictable developments of the world’s political, security, and economic situation that have profound, multifaceted impacts on the security and development of countries. Since the beginning of this year, the world economy has continued to show signs of improvement, but at a slow pace, with high uncertainty and unevenness due to the ongoing risks of prolonged conflicts, strategic competition, and electoral situations in major countries. With the theme of “Building a fair world and a sustainable planet,” the 2024 G20 Summit, hosted by Brazil, prioritizes discussions on social inclusion and poverty eradication; sustainable development and energy transition; and global governance reform.

For Brazil, the Vietnam-Brazil relations have been witnessing positive development in many fields. Brazil’s invitation for Vietnam to attend the G20 Summit shows its appreciation and recognition of Vietnam’s prestige and position in the region and in the world. This is the fifth time Vietnam has been invited to attend the G20 Summit. Previously, in 2010, Canada and RoK invited Vietnam to the event in the role of ASEAN Chair. As the host of APEC 2017, Vietnam was invited to attend the G20 Summit and related activities in Germany. In 2019, Japan invited Vietnam to participate in the G20 Summit as a guest. In 2020, as ASEAN Chair, Vietnam was invited to attend the G20 Summit hosted by Saudi Arabia. Participating in this important event is an opportunity for Vietnam to affirm itself as a reliable partner, and an active and responsible member of the international community, as well as emphasize its stance of being ready to join hands and make positive and substantive contribution to addressing global challenges.

After attending the G20 Summit and engaging in bilateral activities in Brazil, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, his spouse, and the Vietnamese delegation will pay an official visit to the Dominican Republic. The visit is of historic significance in bilateral relations as this is the first time a key Vietnamese leader has visited the Dominican Republic. Over the past time, the Vietnam-Dominican Republic relations have developed in a positive manner. The two sides have maintained delegation exchanges. Economic and trade cooperation has tended to increase with a trade turnover of about 100 million USD/year. Both nations have also maintained coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums such as the U.N. and the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).

The PM’s trip aims to actively implement the foreign policy of the 13th National Party Congress, Directive No.25-CT/TW of the Secretariat on enhancing and elevating multilateral diplomacy until 2030; in line with the level of the Vietnam-Brazil comprehensive partnership and the Vietnam-Dominican Republic traditional friendship. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's participation at the G20 Summit emphasizes Vietnam's role and responsibility to multilateral mechanisms, including the G20; affirming Vietnam's viewpoint of promoting multilateralism and international solidarity for peace, stability, cooperation, and development. This is also an opportunity for Vietnam to further strengthen cooperation with Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and international partners in various fields.

It can be believed that the working trip of the Prime Minister would conclude successfully, contributing to further enhancing Vietnam’s prestige and position in the region and the world. The visit will also create momentum to boost Vietnam's relations with Brazil and the Dominican Republic in a deep, substantive, and effective manner and open up many new cooperation opportunities with international partners.
