Talking to Vietnam News Agency’s correspondent at a press conference in Tokyo, the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s official revealed why Suga chooses Vietnam as a destination in his first overseas trip after taking office.

The first reason is that the strategic partnership between Japan and Vietnam is developing very strongly, and the second is that Vietnam, as the Chair of ASEAN 2020, is playing an important role in Japan's foreign policy towards ASEAN, he said.

During his visit, PM Suga could make a commitment that Tokyo will take the lead in contributing to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, and   affirm Japan's full support for the “the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), the official said.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PM Suga and his spouse will pay visits to Vietnam and Indonesia from October 18 to 21.

In Vietnam, the Japanese leader is expected to have meetings with Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, and hold talks with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

He will also address students of the Vietnam-Japan University and participate in other activities.
