Japanese group Coccolo is providing the Vietnamese company Hanel with the technology to produce the world’s first third-generation lithium-ion batteries from magnesium extracted from sea water.
This is the most advanced technology in the field and it is being transferred solely to Vietnam, said Coccolo president Kazuyuki Toyosato at the cooperation agreement signing in Tokyo on March 23.
All of this type of rechargeable battery manufactured by Hanel will be shipped to Japan.
The technology was developed by Professor Takashi Yabe from the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
Magnesium batteries are environmentally-friendly and help conserve energy while the ocean's magnesium reserves are virtually limitless, Yabe said.
