Viettel has been pushing up the building of 10 5G BTS in order to launch pilot run of its first 5G network in ward 12 of the city’s district 10 later this month.

The operation of this first 5G network in HCM City will mark the first time that the military business will have built the whole 5G core network on the virtualized telecom infrastructure (Telco Cloud).

This technology helps Viettel reduce preparation time while becoming more flexible in operating its 5G network.

According to Senior Colonel Tao Duc Thang, Deputy Director General of Viettel, the telecom service provider aims to help local people and subscribers soon experience 5G services. Meanwhile, these 5G BTS in HCM City will serve as a pilot plan for Viettel to get a comprehensive assessment of its 5G services before being introduced commercially to the market in 2020.

According to license No.26/GP-BTTTT by the Ministry of Information and Communications, Viettel is conducting a 5G technical test on C-Band at a frequency between 3700MHz and 3800MHz in HCM City. At present, the connection speed in the pilot 5G network in the city   is from 1,000 to 1,300Mbps, and is expected to increase in the future.

Previously, Viettel installed the first 5G BTS of Vietnam in Hanoi and made the first 5G phone call in May 2019. The call has made Vietnam one of the first countries in the world that has successfully tested the 5G technology.
