In his opening speech, Thang underlined “the meeting takes place at a time when Vietnam and the RoK are enjoying the comprehensive development of bilateral relations in all fields.”

The purpose of the committee’s 17th session was to concretize bilateral deals reached at the first Vietnam - RoK dialogue on economic cooperation at the Deputy Prime Ministerial level in June 21, 2019 in Seoul.

In addition, the two sides reviewed outcomes of their economic cooperation since the previous meeting (October 2017), and set orientations for cooperation in the coming time. The two sides also made preparation for a visit of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to the RoK on the occasion of the ASEAN-RoK Summit in November 2019.

The year of 2019 marks the 27th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations. Vietnam and the RoK have witnessed a remarkable progress in their comprehensive cooperation for the sake of the two countries, which has resulted in deeper mutual trust and understanding between the two sides and the establishment of the Vietnam-RoK comprehensive strategic partnership.

As of 2018, the RoK was Vietnam’s third largest trade partner – the fourth largest importer from Vietnam, and the second largest exporter to Vietnam.

By August 2019, the RoK was the leading partner of Vietnam in direct foreign investment as it has registered to invest about USD 65 billion in over 8,000 projects in the country. The RoK businesses are an important part of Vietnam’s economy, contributing around 30 percent to the Southeast Asian country’s export value last year.
