PANO - During the first days of the new lunar year, localities across the country organize solemn ceremonies to congratulate elder people who reach the age of 70, 80, 90, or above.

This long-standing beautiful tradition of the Vietnamese people demonstrates young people’s gratitude to and respect for their parents, grandparents, and elders as well as the tradition, “When drinking water, remember who dug the well”.

In recent years, this tradition has been boosted among the community to further promote the elders’ role in families and society as a whole. On the day, the elderly are offered red clothing and gifts from their children, grandchildren, and local organisations.

Children, grandchildren, and locals in Ha Tri ward, Ha Dong district, Hanoi, congratulate Mr. Dang Van Doanh and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Nguong for their age of 90 years old.
Duong Coc hamlet, Dong Quang commune, Quoc Oai district, Hanoi, organizes a longevity celebration for the elderly in the hamlet.
Nguyen Thi Lan of Huu Lau ward, Viet Tri city, Phu Tho province, also received a congratulation letter from State President Truong Tan Sang and a 5m-long red silk in recognition of her 100th year.
