Ceremony to mark the 80th birthday of Russian translator

PANO – A ceremony to mark the 80th birthday of Marian Tkachev took place in Hanoi on May 11th by the Vietnam Writers’ Association.

Marian Tkachev, a Russian translator, translated many classical and contemporary Vietnamese literary works into Russian, such as "Truyen ky man luc", "Vang bong mot thoi" and "Giua hai mua xuan", especially the book, “Adventure of a home-cricket”, written by To Hoai, which became one of the most beloved books in Russia.

To translate Vietnamese literary works into Russian, Marian Tkachev spent a lot of time learning about the history, culture, language and the life of Vietnamese people. Thus, he knew about the source and meanings of Vietnamese idioms and proverbs as well as had deep understanding about the style of Vietnamese writers, such as Nguyen Tuan and To Hoai.

For his contributions to developing Vietnamese literature in Russia, Marian Tkachev was offered the Friendship Medal, for Russia’s cultural activists, by the Vietnam State in 1988.

Also at the ceremony, the organising panel introduced a book, “Marian Tkachev–Talented and Wholehearted Friend”, to help Vietnamese people learn more about his life and career.
