Initial activities of AMM-55 and related meetings held
PANO - A meeting of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty Commission and a dialogue between ASEAN Foreign Ministers and representatives of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) were held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on August 2.
These are initial activities within the framework of the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM-55). Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the events.

At the SEANWFZ Treaty Commission’s meeting, participating countries agreed to extend the Plan of Action (POA) to Strengthen the Implementation of the SEANWFZ for the 2022-2026 period. The delegates also agreed to strengthen consultations and urge the countries that have nuclear weapons to sign the SEANWFZ protocol.
Minister Bui Thanh Son suggested that ASEAN should promote the role and values of SEANWFZ, contributing to the international community’s efforts in ensuring nuclear security and safety. The Vietnamese high-ranking diplomat also called for efforts to seek solutions to the signing of the SEANWFZ protocol.
Meanwhile, at the dialogue, the AICHR representatives highlighted the significance of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of its issuance, along with the ten-member group’s efforts to implement commitments and protect fundamental freedoms, contributing to bringing a better life to people, even amid COVID-19.

Minister Bui Thanh Son spoke highly of AICHR’s efforts to overcome difficulties and maintain its operations. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining solidarity and observing the basic principles of ASEAN in implementing AICHR activities.
* The same day, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son had a meeting with his Lao counterpart Saleumxay Kommasith. The two officials stressed the meaning of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations (September 5, 1962 - 2022) and 45 years since the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (July 18, 1977 - 2022).
The two sides agreed to continue enhancing delegation exchange and collaboration mechanisms between the two foreign ministries in the time to come.
