Vietnamese doctors perform liver transplant on two-year-old girl
PANO – On December 28, the Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University Hospital released the news that they had successfully performed the first liver transplant on a two-year-old child without foreign experts’ support.
According to the hospital, the patient is a two-year-old girl from Dong Nai province. The girl was diagnosed with last-stage cirrhosis and biliary infection. The girl suffered from congenital biliary atresia when she was only two months old.

After consultations with doctors from the Children Hospital 2, the HCM City Medicine and Pharmacy University Hospital decided to conduct a liver transplant to save the girl.
The donor is her father. After seven days of transplantation, the donor was in stable condition and discharged from the hospital. Meanwhile, the girl was recovering well after four weeks of intensive care at the recovery room and the Department of Hepatobiliary -Pancreatic Surgery. She has been allowed to leave the hospital.
The transplant was co-performed by doctors from the HCM City Medicine and Pharmacy University Hospital and the Children Hospital 2.
