Vietnam will host the 48th International Mathematics Olympiad from July 19-31, said Deputy Minister of Education and Training Tran Van Nhung at a press briefing in Hanoi, on July 6.

As many as 520 students from 95 countries and territories from around the world will take part in the contest, the first of its kind held by the country, Nhung said, adding that Vietnam will send a team of six students to the competition.

The deputy minister said Vietnam first participated in the International Mathematic Olympiad in 1974 and since then has regularly ranked in the top ten nations in terms of the number of secured medals.

At the last event, Vietnamese students brought home two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, bringing their total haul over all competitions to 35 gold, 73 silver and 51 bronze.

According to the official, the International Physics Olympiad 2008 will also be held in Vietnam for the first time.
