False information about situation in Hoa Thinh flood epicenter

PANO - According to reporters from the People’s Army Newspaper, by midday on November 23, the once flood-ravaged Hoa Thinh commune of Dak Lak province was already seeing sunshine. Roads had dried. Only a few low-lying areas in the locality remained partially inundated.

Convoys of relief vehicles hurried into the commune. At the centers of the villages, residents formed lines to receive aid from charitable organizations. According to villagers at hardest-hit villages in Phu Huu, My Xuan 1, My Xuan 2, My Dien, Canh Tinh, Phu Dien, they had never witnessed such a devastating flood. Amid hardships, they were supported wholeheartedly by local authorities and armed forces, as well as by the compassion of people from across the country.

Contrary to online rumors, village officials and residents provided accurate information about casualties. In My Xuan 1, village’s head Nguyen Dinh Thien confirmed that only one resident, 98-year-old Tran Thi Nhu, had died due to old age and frailty. Rumors claiming a collapsed two-story house killing many people were entirely false. At her home, Pham Thi Minh Bao expressed distress that such misinformation had frightened the community.

In Phu Huu, one of the hardest-hit villages, residents reported only 5–6 deaths, not as high as the online exaggerated numbers . They stressed that false claims could easily be exploited to cause unnecessary panic.

As floodwaters receded, Hoa Thinh resembled a battlefield. Troops from Military Region 5 promptly assisted in cleanup and recovery. Colonel Vo Duc Cuong, Second-in-Command of Division 315 under Military Region 5 said that the unit had deployed more than 200 personnel to clean schools, public offices, medical facilities, historical sites, and help villagers repair homes and roads.

According to Le Chi Hoai, Chairman of the Hoa Thinh Commune People’s Committee, the commune recorded 23 deaths and one missing person, mostly elderly individuals with underlying conditions. He called for continued support in rice, drinking water, children’s milk, blankets, clothing, and disinfectants to help residents recover.
