As a member of the United Nation during the past 30 years, Viet Nam has actively taken part in the organisation's activities in such fields as peace, international security, disarmament, socio-economic and cultural development, and environmental protection.

The First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Le Cong Phung, made the remark in an interview by the Viet Nam News Agency after the general debate of the 61st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Sept. 25.

Viet Nam's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in the 2008-2009 term is representative of the Party's and State's foreign policy for independence, self-control, diversification and multilateralisation of international relations, Phung said, adding that it will also help the country make further contribution to the international community's activities.

According to the senior official, as a UN Security Council member, Viet Nam will have more chances to work with other member countries in the council as well as in the UN to keep international peace and security in line with regulations in the UN Charter.

The positive results of this work will create favourable conditions for maintaining a peaceful environment, helping accelerate Viet Nam's renewal process, socio-economic development, industrialisation and modernisation, and national construction, as well as contributing to joint efforts for peace in the world.

Phung also said through cooperative activities to solve the council's issues, Viet Nam will have a chance to demonstrate its peaceful and cooperative policies, goodwill and the capacity to be involved in international activities, helping improve the country's position in the international arena.
