Originating from China, the Black River passes through some Northwestern localities of Vietnam, including Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, Hoa Binh and Phu Tho provinces and joins the Red and Lo rivers in Phu Tho province before reaching the sea. Previously, the river was well-known for its falls and rapids. Only experienced rowers are able to row boats down the stream. Competence of boat rowers on the river is described in Nguyen Tuan’s literature work “Boatman on the Da River.”

At present, many localities have developed tourism products to take full advantage of the river's natural beauty. Tourists can row boats down the stream, visit some landscapes and rest in local homestays.

Bridges crossing the 500-km long river help promote connectivity and trade activities among people on the banks.

A marker marking the center of Quynh Nhai district is now submerged on the bed of a reservoir of the hydroelectric plant.

Different kinds of fruit trees and vegetables and crops planted on hills make the landscapes more colorful.

Sunset on the river reminds tourists the charming view in Ha Long bay.

At present, three large hydroelectric plants built on the Black River in Lai Chau, Son La and Hoa Binh provinces.

The Temple dedicated to King Le Thai To has a stele which is recognized as a National Treasure. The version engraved on the stone stele tells how King Le Thai To defeat the rebels in the Northwest region in 1431.

Visitors have an opportunity to learn about the life-style and customs of ethnic minority groups, such as the H’mong, Thai, Dao and Muong people living along the river banks.

Tourists can choose to stay overnight at resorts, hotels or houses-on-stilts homestays built along the river.

Resorts along the river in Son La and Hoa Binh provinces offer many services, such as boat rowing, kayaking, trekking, etc., to tourists.

Touring Northwest localities, tourists are advised to taste local dishes made from fresh ingredients, such as bamboo spouts, fish, pork, beef and glutinous rice.
