Accordingly, the Yen Bai provincial Military Command deployed two boats and 16 rafts to conduct search and rescue missions in Khao Mang Lake and other places. At present, seven people in the province are still missing.

The units also sent their troops to help schools and localities mitigate consequences and locals stabilize their life.

On August 5, Division 316’s troops worked with local forces to dredge mud on rural roads and gathered sand and rocks and trees. Troops hoped to soon help locals resume their production and life. 

Colonel Nguyen Van Xuan, Deputy Commander of the unit said that having learnt about the disaster, the unit immediately sent troops to the scene to search for victims and help locals overcome consequences of the floods.

For the issue of hygiene after the floods, the logistics troops of Division 316 took measures to prevent some diseases as well as equipped locals with methods to stay healthy, said Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Hong Son, Deputy Logistics Chief of the division.

In response to the calamity, the Ministry of National Defense asked Military Region 2 and military units stationed in flood-hit localities to mobilize forces, vehicles, and equipment to search for victims, clean up the environment, prevent diseases, and help locals resume their production. In addition, the ministry urged the units to evacuate locals to safer places and roll out plans to cope with urgent situations.

According to the Standing Office of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, as of August 5, torrential rains, flash floods, and landslides in Northern localities left 18 dead, 12 injured, and 18 others missing. Two hundred and twenty nine houses were swept away or collapsed; 42 families had to be evacuated; 144 irrigation projects and 2,000 meters of dykes in Son La were damaged. Agriculturally, 226 hectares of rice and 128 hectares of corn and peanut were destroyed. Landslides with thousands of cubic meters of earth isolated many localities in Son La. The initial loss was estimated at VND 718.2 billion.
