The patient encounters decompression sickness.

The patient, Phan Duom, aged 56, a resident in An Vinh commune, Ly Son district, Quang Ngai province, working on trawler QNg 96372 TS, was hospitalized at 15:30 on September 18. He was in the state of chest pain, shortness of breath, quadriplegia, blood pressure measured at 95/50 mmHg, breathing rate of 22 times/minute, and hearing loss.

The fisherman encountered decompression sickness after 30 minutes of diving at a depth of 30m under the sea when the trawler was going fishing in the waters near Southwest Cay.

Through examination and diagnosis, the medical staff initially concluded that the patient suffered from type 2 decompression sickness. They gave him oxygen breathing, and medicines to help prevent blood clots and increase cerebral blood flow.

On the morning of September 19, the patient's health was stable, his legs, arms and hearing recovered.

Currently, Southwest Cay is isolating the patient while continuing to monitor and treat him.

During the process of  receiving and treating the patient, the infirmary’s medical personnel strictly observed COVID-19 prevention and control regulations and provided food and fresh water for other fishermen on the trawler.
