Troops on Son Ca Island receive fisherman Le Huu Cuong |
On August 11, trawler BD 95642TS, captained by Tran Quang Luan, with two other crew-members of Binh Dinh province on board was about to sink while fishing offshore near Eldad Reef of the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, some 13 nautical mile from Son Ca Island.
Receiving a mayday signal, ship KN 402 of Fisheries Group 4 under the Vietnam Fisheries Resources Surveillance, Directorate of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, rushed to the scene for a rescue mission.
Due to rough seas, it took the ship nearly 3 hours to approach the troubled trawler, at 18:00 the same day. Three fishermen were taken to ship KN 402 and then transferred to the rescue station of Son Ca Island at 06:00 on August 12. On the island, the fishermen were provided with free health treatment and food. The island’s medical team also contacted trawler BD 96768-TS to take the troubled fishermen and a patient, Pham Van Tra, under treatment at the island infirmary since August 8, ashore.
Also on August 12, Son Ca Island Infirmary received fisherman Le Huu Cuong from Khanh Hoa province aboard trawler QNg 95122 TS, with Nguyen Ro at the helm. Cuong experienced a stroke while the trawler was fishing near Son Ca Island.
