Cambodian sailor successfully rescued after drifting at sea
PANO - On June 21, the Border Post of the Duong Dong Port Border Gate under the An Giang provincial Border Guard Command successfully rescued a Cambodian sailor drifting in the waters off Phu Quoc.
Earlier, at 10:45 a.m. on June 20, upon receiving a report from locals about a person clinging to a plastic jerrycan in the sea near Duong Dong, Phu Quoc Special Zone, An Giang province, the unit immediately deployed a canoe for a search-and-rescue operation. By 11:25 a.m., the force located and safely rescued the victim approximately two kilometers off the coast.

The rescued individual was identified as Thon Chhay (born in 2005, Cambodian national). After being brought to the border post for medical care, his health condition stabilized, and he started eating normally.
According to Thon Chhay, he and the vessel’s owner departed from Cambodia on an unregistered, nine-meter-long fishing boat. At around 11:00 p.m. on June 19, while operating in the waters of Kampong Som, the boat encountered large waves and sank. Thon Chhay managed to cling to a plastic jerrycan to stay afloat, while the owner’s whereabouts remain unknown.
The unit is continuing to monitor the victim’s health and is handling the case in accordance with legal regulations.
