New anti-drone weapon made in Vietnam
PANO - To combat illegally operated drones, a team from the Vietnam Military Technical Academy (MTA) has successfully researched and developed a handheld drone suppression device named CA-18GL.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are more and more in use, mainly for socio-economic purposes. However, the operation of these vehicles easily causes incidents, threatening the national defense, social order and safety, as well as aviation safety.

The Made-in-Vietnam CA-18GL drone suppression device has many outstanding features. |
Major Nguyen Van Viet, technician of MTA’s Faculty of Radio-Electronic Engineering and member of the team, said that researching, designing, and developing a drone suppression device require much effort and time. The products developed must keep up with the continuous and rapid changes and development of drones in the market. Their features must be equivalent to other countries’ modern products but at a more reasonable price. After years of hard work, the inventors have successfully developed the CA-18GL drone suppression device which is effectively applied to reality.
According to Major Viet, the device has such basic features as forcing the illegally-operated drones to land immediately; forcing the drones to return to their departure positions; simultaneously suppressing many drones in the same direction; faking GPS to create an ‘artificial no-fly zone’ to prevent drones from entering the protected areas.
One of the outstanding features of the CA-18GL compared to other similar foreign products is the capability of simulating an ‘artificial no-fly zone’ by interfering with GPS signals to deceive drones’ positioning and guiding devices. With this outstanding feature, the CA-18GL can create an ‘artificial no-fly zone’ to protect targets.
In addition, the team apply software-defined radio technology, which can be updated and changed by software to better meet new mission requirements.
With this outstanding achievement, the authors of the device were honored with the Certificate of Merit by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee during the emulation movement themed ‘Solidarity and creativity to improve the productivity, quality, and efficiency of international integration.’ In 2022, this product also won the first prize at the 16th edition of the VIFOTEC competition (Vietnam Fund for Supporting Technological Creation).
