Vietnam, Malaysia to expand defense ties
PANO – The Vietnamese Defense Ministry wants to have close cooperation with the Malaysian Defense Ministry when Vietnam takes the ASEAN Chair in 2020.
This was underlined by Senior Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and Deputy Defense Minister, while hosting Liew Chin Tong, Malaysian Deputy Defense Minister in Hanoi on December 5.
At the reception, Giang and Liew agreed that defense relations between Vietnam and Malaysia have continuously expanded in various fields such as personnel training, naval cooperation, and coordination at multilateral forums.

They also underlined the potential areas to further promote the bilateral defense cooperation on par with their strategic partnership, including the necessity of establishing a senior committee on bilateral defense cooperation co-chaired by the two defense ministers and signing a memorandum of understanding on bilateral defense cooperation at an appropriate time.
For his part, Deputy Minister Liew said that there will be a number of activities that the two countries can work together in 2020 when Kuala Lumpur hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and Hanoi holds the role of a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure and ASEAN Chair 2020.
