At the meeting, General Robert Brieger emphasized that the signing of the agreement between Vietnam and the E.U. on the establishment of a framework for Vietnam’s participation in crisis management activities of the E.U. in 2019 was a lively testament to the two sides’ good will and capability to enhance the cooperative ties.
He thanked the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense for sending two officers to the E.U. training mission in the Central African Republic. He stressed that the E.U. Military Committee highly appreciated the competence and professionalism of Vietnamese troops engaging in U.N. peacekeeping operations. He said the E.U. Military Committee is willing to continue to task its experts with giving assistance to the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, to receive high-ranking Vietnamese officers to training courses on defense and security, and support Vietnam to settle war legacy.
For his part, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien spoke highly of good cooperation outcomes between Vietnam and the E.U. in general and the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense and the E.U. Military Commission in particular over the past time.

The Vietnamese senior officer emphasized that Vietnam attaches importance to developing its partnership and comprehensive cooperation with the E.U. in a substantive and effective manner.
According to him, on the basis of the signed cooperation documents, the bilateral defense ties have been boosted, reaping practical achievements in different areas. He highlighted the establishment and effective maintenance of the Vietnam - E.U. Defense - Security Dialogue, the two sides’ cooperation in U.N. peacekeeping, training, and overcoming war consequences.
He said that with the cooperation and support of the E.U., the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense has completed nomination procedures to send its two officers to the U.N. Training Mission in the Central African Republic this year. He also praised some E.U. member states and European international and non-governmental organizations for their effective support for the country in addressing consequences of post-war bombs and mines and toxic chemicals.

Regarding the cooperation orientations in the time ahead, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien suggested the two sides continue to work closely and effectively to implement cooperation contents according to the signed agreements, and each side’s need and real condition.
The Vietnamese official also suggested several orientations for further cooperation such as the maintenance of all-level delegation exchange, particularly high-level one, early organization of the third Vietnam - E.U. Defense - Security Dialogue, sending of experts to share experience and expertise to help develop the training center of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations to be on par with the regional level, and enhancement of cooperation in settlement of war legacy in Vietnam.
