This information was heard at a ceremony to release the 2019 Vietnam National Defense White Paper under the chair of Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Defense Minister in Hanoi on November 25.

The Central Military Commission and Defense Ministry see these events as major external missions in the 2018-2020 period.

The ministry has built up plans in line with the theme “Cohesive and Responsive” for the ASEAN Chairmanship Year 2020. Then, the ministry chose “Defense cooperation for a Cohesive and Responsive ASEAN” as the theme of the ASEAN defense events.

According to Major General Le Xuan Sang, Deputy Director of the Department of Political Education and Information under the General Department of Politics, the Vietnamese Defense Ministry will give priority to military-defense cooperation within ASEAN and between the bloc and its partners. They will also actively propose new initiatives and cooperation mechanisms, expand military-defense relations among ASEAN member nations to address security issues, and enhance Vietnam’s capability through boosting practical cooperation and co-chairing the ADMM+ Experts Group on peacekeeping operations.

Furthermore, the ministry targets to promote other potential contents, such as establishing several ASEAN centers to facilitate cooperation and seek support of ASEAN’s partners for the bloc’s development, and popularizing ASEAN’s images via joint activities.
