20 nations register to join IPU symposium on climate change
Twenty countries registered to participate in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)’s symposium for the Asia-Pacific region on response to climate change, to be held in Ho Chi Minh City from May 11-13.
The information was released at a meeting of the symposium’s Organizing Board in Hanoi on May 4.
Erosion is considered caused by climate change.
National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong said that the symposium, which is co-organized by the IPU and the Vietnamese legislature, will deliberate legislators’ actions to realize the sustainable development goals (SDGs) amid climate change.
According to Phong, the theme for the event had been discussed carefully and selected by the United Nations and the IPU.
Head of the NA Committee for External Relations and deputy head of the organizing board Nguyen Van Giau, said the symposium will comprise three main sessions, focusing on the SDGs and the role of parliaments; promotion of gender equality and public health when adapting to climate change; challenges and opportunities facing countries in the region; international commitments and requirements for legislators; and mobilization of resources for realizing the SDGs.
