The total grant aid value for the project is around 1.8 billion Japanese yen (roughly VND 380 billion at the time of the grant agreement signing).

During the period of 2017-2023, through the JICA project, Japan has provided advanced equipment and established a comprehensive information network for disaster prevention, appropriate emergency forecasting and warning measures in the Huong River basin, while enhancing the operation and management system of the three large dams namely Binh Dien, Huong Dien, and Ta Trach in consideration of disaster risk management.

The project is believed to contribute to the implementation of the Vietnam’s National Strategy on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, and the Integrated Flood Management Plan in the Huong River basin towards sustainable socio-economic development in Vietnam.

The effective reservoir operation and management is one of the important goals of the Vietnamese Government to ensure water resource security and safety of dykes and reservoirs by 2030. The Huong River basin in Thua Thien Hue province is the area facing heavy rainfall and suffering flood damages frequently. Therefore, effective operation of the three dams during heavy rainfalls and comprehensive flood management in the Huong River basin play an important role in preventing and minimizing human and economic losses and in building a pilot model for replication in other river basins.

In the coming time, JICA will actively work with the Government and people of Japan to continue the cooperation and support for Vietnam in disaster risk management.
