The Prime Minister has just approved a project to increase national electricity capacity in the period from 2006-2015, with a view to 2025.
Under the project, the national electricity charge is expected to rise by 17% per year, and possibly by 20% in the period from 2006-2015, in accordance with targeted economic growth rates of 8.5%-9% in between 2006-2010.
This creates more pressure on the Vietnam Electricity Corporation, as it has to accelerate the construction of both on-going and new projects, harmoniously exploit sources, and boost cooperation with foreign partners.
The Prime Minister has also called on individuals and organisations at home and abroad to invest in electricity.
Recently, the Vietnamese Government has been considering projects to build a nuclear power plant in Vietnam as a long-term solution for the chronic power shortage in the country.
