The Gardeners’ Association of Vinh Cuu district, Dong Nai province has signed a contract to export in June 2007 over 40,000 Tan Trieu grapefruits, a local specialty, to
Singapore at a price of 18,000 VND per 1kg.
Since early this year, the district has sold over 50,000 grapefruits and 15,000 litres of wine made from the fruit. In 2007, over 100,000 Tan Trieu grapefruits and 25,000 litres of wine are expected to be sold.
At present, nearly 2,000 households mainly in Tan Binh and Binh Loi communes are growing grapefruit trees on an area of 700ha.
Tan Trieu grapefruit is famous in the southern region for its special flavour. Over the past 10 years, the province and Vinh Cuu district have replanted that kind of fruit. Many grapefruit villages earn hundreds of million VND each year by growing the tree.
Dong Nai province is striving to expand the area of grapefruit trees up to 1,000 ha by 2010.
