The North-South express railway project 1,570 km long, and a total investment of some US $55.85 billion, has been defined as a strategic one of the Vietnam Railway sector.

The project implemented by a joint venture named VJC among Vietnamese transport investment and construction consultant joint-stock company and 3 Japanese partners, namely JTC Corporation, Japan Railway Technical Services and Nippon Koei Ltd. to carry out the implementation of the work.

According to VJC’s estimates, the area of land that needs clearing could exceed 4,170 ha.: of which 9 per cent belongs to urban residential areas, 20 per cent will be reclaimed from rural residential places, and the rest is agricultural and forestry land.

VJC said that some 16,500 families would be affected by the project, so the compensation for land clearing will amount to VND 30 trillion.

The future North-South express railway will utilize Japanese Shinkasen technology with some modifications suitable for Vietnamese conditions.

Two sections, namely Hanoi-Vinh and Sai Gon-Nha Trang, will be given priority and will be operational by 2020, while the whole project is expected to be completed by 2035.

The express train will then run at 350 km per hour and will take 5 and a half hours to travel between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
