According to Can Tho authorities, Fukuoka is not only a key economic, cultural, and educational hub in Japan, but also a model in sustainable urban development, smart management and environmental protection, particularly in water resources management and the enhancement of quality of life.
Relevant agencies of the two cities are working closely to complete procedures for a technical cooperation project on drainage, aiming to strengthen Can Tho’s climate resilience. The project is to be funded through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)'s Partnership Program, with a total grant of 55.1 million JPY (345,000 USD), disbursed via Fukuoka.
Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima noted that since both cities attended the 13th Asia-Pacific City Summit in Fukuoka in 2022, they have engaged in discussions on sustainable urban development and urban challenges. He expressed delight at the MoU signing, calling it a key opportunity to enhance people-to-people and economic ties between Fukuoka and Can Tho.
Fukuoka and Vietnam have maintained various forms of economic exchange and cooperation. Several Vietnamese firms have expanded operations in Fukuoka, while the Japanese city has supported local businesses in reaching international markets. Since 2023, Fukuoka has participated in the Vietwater expo to foster water and environmental business linkages with Vietnamese partners.
