Vietnamese female chess player earns gold at continental chess championship
PANO – Vietnamese chess player Vo Thi Kim Phung won a gold medal in women’s chess standard category of the on-going Asian Continental Chess Championships in China after nine rounds.

At the final round, the Vietnamese female grandmaster drew with her Indian rival Mary Ann Gomes to grab the medal with 7.5 points. With this excellent result, Kim Phung advanced to the Chess World Cup 2018. She is the second Vietnamese grandmaster winning gold medal in standard category at the championship after Hoang Thanh Trang, who won the game 17 years ago.
In the same category, her teammates, Hoang Thi Bao Tram, Nguyen Thi Mai Hung and Pham Le Thao Nguyen ranked the sixth, ninth and 11th, respectively.
In men’s standard category, Vietnamese chess players Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Tran Minh Tuan ranked the 14th with 5.5 points and 19th positions with 5 points, respectively.
In the following days, the Vietnamese team continues competing on men’s and women’s rapid and blitz categories.
