Traditional lacquer village in Hanoi
PANO – Ha Thai village of Thuong Tin district, Hanoi about 20km south of the city’s center, has been famous for its traditional lacquer craft.
Local artisans with diligence, skillfulness and creativity make their products unique and attractive, such as flower vases, bowls, trays, horizontal lacquered boards and parallel sentences, to meet demands of customers at home and abroad.
Recently, Hanoi has developed tours to traditional craft villages and Ha Thai is one among the seven villages. The tours to the craft villages aim to promote tourism and promote products of the craft villages at home and abroad.
Here are several photos featuring the lacquer making process.

At the very first phase of the traditional craft process, Ha Thai artisans shape products by grinders. The main materials are wood, bamboo, rattan and, more recently, composite and ceramics. |

|
Then, products were coated with layers of natural lacquer. |
|
|
Today, they use power sprayers to paint products. |

Final products are checked carefully before being displayed at shops. |
