PANO – The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in association with the People’s Committee of Yen Bai province, met on October 26th in Yen Bai city to compile documents of the Xoe dance of the Thai ethnic minority, the traditional dance of the Thai minority ethnic group to be submitted to UNESCO for recognition as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Department of Cultural Heritage decided to establish a steering committee including representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and provinces of Yen Bai, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, and Son La to prepare the dossier. The committee also received great support from artists, authors and locals who have been keeping documents on the dance.

The Xoe dance has been included in the Government’s intangible heritage list to be submitted to UNESCO in the 2012-2016 period. The traditional dance of the Northwestern provinces is expected to be recognized as the intangible cultural heritage of humanity by 2019.
