Sene Dolta, which is celebrated from the 30th of the eighth lunar month to the second of the ninth lunar month each yea, is one of the most important religious festivals for Khmer ethnic people, along with Chol Chnam Thmay (New Year) and Ooc Oom Bok to thank the Moon for a good harvest.

During the event, people gather to pay homage to their ancestors and enjoy traditional singing and dancing after a year of hard work.

Leaders of Soc Trang province have paid visits to local Khmer pagodas to offer greetings on the occasion, and presented gifts to those in need.

On September 15, Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Phan Van Sau visited Most Venerable Duong Nhon – Deputy Supreme Patriarch of the Patronage Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS), head of the provincial Association for Solidarity of Patriotic Buddhist Monks and head of Prek On Dot Pagoda in My Xuyen district.

The official praised the contributions made by the Most Venerable, other monks and Buddhist followers to local development. He urged the Buddhist dignitaries to continue to encourage followers to actively join in patriotic emulation campaigns and build a rich and prosperous Soc Trang province.

Local Khmer people also pay attention to epidemic prevention work, avoiding gathering in large numbers in ceremonies at local pagodas.

Soc Trang province is home to over 397,000 Khmer people who account for 30 percent of the province’s population. They live mainly in Chau Thanh, Long Phu, My Xuyen, Cu Lao Dung and My Tu districts.
