“We expect that the contest will encourage students and their parents to pay more attention to book reading to make it a good habit and excitement for all,” said Bui Thi Minh Nga, Deputy-Head of the General Education Office under the Hanoi Department of Education and Training. Nga also emphasized the significance of this contest, especially in the context that the reading culture of Vietnamese people in general and of young people in particular is on decline.

The contest is open for students from primary and secondary schools in Hanoi.

Contestants will have a writing paper introducing the book they love the most and answer the question that “If you are selected as an Ambassador of Reading Culture of the Capital City in the 2017-2018 academic year, what will you do to encourage others to read more books?”.

Contestants can send more than one entry in either writing form or video clip and in Vietnamese or English language as well.

Entries should be e-mailed to daisudoc@vicc.org.vn before April 1.

The award ceremony is expected to take place on May 26.

The contestant with the best writing showing their fondness for a particular book, demonstrating their understanding of the benefits of book reading and suggesting creative and feasible ideas on promoting a book-reading culture among the community will be awarded this year’s title of Ambassador of Reading Culture of Hanoi.

The ambassadors will join ambassadors of previous contests in realizing the idea of spreading the love with books among people.

Such a contest was firstly held in 2016, attracting over 10,000 entries in both Vietnamese and English.

The contest is jointly organized by the Vietnam Intellectual Cooperation Center, the Hanoi Departments of Education and Training, Information and Communications and Culture and Sports.
