Cambodia’s newly-elected National Assembly held its first meeting on September 5.

Addressing the meeting, King Norodom Sihamoni called for the new law-makers’ loyalty and devotion to the people.

After the King left the National Assembly for the Royal Palace, the National Assembly meeting was presided over by Samdech Heng Samrim, the oldest parliamentarian and Chairman of the fifth National Assembly and Honorary President of the CPP.

Law-makers approved the list of the new parliamentarians and the operational regulations of the new parliament.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Vu Quang Minh and diplomatic delegations, including ambassadors of ASEAN countries, attended the session, along with ambassadors from the US and the European Union.

All the lawmakers-elect are expected to take an oath of allegiance at the Royal Palace on the afternoon of the same day.

On September 6, the National Assembly is due to vote for its leadership and then give a vote of confidence to the new government.

Earlier on August 17, the Cambodian King signed a Royal order to appoint Samdech Hun Sen as the Prime Minister for the 2018-2023 tenure.
