Ta Xua, a highland commune in Son La province, is located about 180 kilometers from Hanoi, taking about 4 and a half hours to travel. This destination is popular during the autumn and winter (from October to April), thanks to its majestic landscapes, favorable weather, and especially the sea of floating clouds.

However, in summer, fewer tourists visit Ta Xua due to frequent rainfall, which makes travel more difficult.

An Ninh and Sang (travel blogger Onthemars) visited Ta Xua in early July. Fortunately, they encountered very little rain and enjoyed cloudy skies throughout their trip.

Ta Xua's specialties are roadside coffee shops and traditional eateries serving ethnic  dishes. These  are also ideal cloud-watching  spots.

An Ninh shared that Ta Xua is also beautiful in summer.

“People often joke that cloud hunting is a ‘test of luck.’ We checked the weather forecast and chose to go after a week of rain. Therefore, the chances of hunting clouds are higher and we could avoid the rain,” Ninh said.

Ta Xua offers many attractions, with the grassland being a must-visit spot. Entry costs VND 30,000 per person. Although the grassland isn’t very large, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and terraced rice fields.

In addition, there is also a waterfall located about 30 kilometers from the center, roughly an hour’s drive.

An Ninh and Sang rented a self-drive car during their three-day stay in Ta Xua. “Since the roads are steep and narrow, if you are hesitant about driving, you can contact local homestays for pick-up and drop-off services,” Ninh suggested.

An Ninh and Sang stayed at two homestays, Cloud Forest and Po Mu Homestay, both featuring spacious wooden cabins with views overlooking the cloud-filled valleys. During the low season, prices are around VND 1 million per night for a double room.

The outdoor spaces are full of trees. Every morning, they could watch the clouds roll in from the bed.

“This trip opened my eyes to a magical image of Vietnam, with the sea of clouds weaving through valleys nestling between the mountains, coffee shops floating in the sky, and cool green grasslands in the heart of the Northwest highlands,” said An Ninh.
