Among the arrivals, visitors from the E.U., the U.S. and Australia increased dramatically because of the high demand for winter vacations of people in the E.U. and U.S.

Vietnam welcomed over 1 million foreign visitors in January 2018.

In January, more than 1 million Asian tourists chose Vietnam as their tourism destination, up by 53.9% compared to the same period last year and visitors from key markets rose significantly, such as China (up 69%), the Republic of Korea (up 84%), Taiwan (China) (up 22.9%), Malaysia (up 35.5%), Thailand (up 11.3%), Singapore (up 16%) and Cambodia (up 36.6%). Repeating the trend, tourist numbers from the EU surged by 22.8%. Showing the similar upward trend, the number of arrivals from the E.U. went up 22.8% in comparison to the same period in 2017.

The General Department of Tourism said that since the beginning of the year, Vietnam has organized various promotion activities to attract more tourists, so as to meet the target of welcoming from 15 to 17 million international tourists in 2018. Recently, Vietnam joined the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2018 in Thailand with various activities, such as building a joint tourism pavilion, organizing a program on introducing Vietnam’s tourism and the role of Vietnam in hosting the ASEAN Tourism Forum in 2019 in Ha Long (Quang Ninh province). At the event, Vietnam was honored with 14 ASEAN tourism awards, including the Green Tourism City Award for Hue, Hoi An and Da Lat. Many hotels, tourism sites and resorts in Hanoi, Ha Long, Vinh Phuc, Thai Nguyen, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang and Con Dao won Green Hotel and Sustainable Tourism Awards. 

Last year, Vietnam received around 13 million foreign tourists and served 74 million domestic tourists. Vietnam’s tourism sector worked closely with ASEAN member countries and partners for the goal of prosperous and sustainable development.
