Under the instruction of the academy’s president, the Institute of Chemistry conducted research and synthesized antiviral drugs in COVID-19 treatment. As a result, scientists have successfully studied a new and effective method of synthesizing the drug Favipiravir in the laboratory.
Favipiravir has a similar mechanism of action as the antiviral drug Remdesivir. It is administered orally and was first used against the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Wuhan, China. This drug has contributed to COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control in Italy, Japan, Russia and other countries.
This research result of the Institute of Chemistry will contribute to Vietnamese scientists’ efforts to develop drugs and vaccines to treat and prevent COVID-19.
According to Director of the Institute Prof., Dr. Nguyen Van Tuyen, the unit’s scientists will continue to perfect and scale up this drug synthesis process.
