On November 28, 1959, President Ho Chi Minh wrote an article which was published on Nhan dan (People) newspaper, stressing the significance of tree planting to each person, each family and the entire nation. It has since become an annual Vietnamese custom each Lunar New Year.

Recalling the appeal by the late President, NA Chairwoman Ngan said that after 60 years, tree planting has become more significant in protecting the environment and natural resources towards sustainable development, especially in the context that climate change is a formidable challenge to human beings in the 21st century.

Green growth and sustainable development have become a top concern of all nations in the world and also a target that Vietnam is striving for, she stated, adding that growing more trees will help mitigate ravages of disasters, prevent erosion, reduce floods and improve the living environment.

She asked local authorities to step up dissemination to raise public awareness of the purpose of tree planting and the role and benefits of afforestation.

Vice Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the People’s Committee Nguyen Van Quang said that the province’s forest coverage now surpasses 51 percent.

In response to the festival, the locality planned to grow more than 2,000 trees on February 13.

On this occasion, the top legislator presented gifts to 30 policy beneficiaries in Luong Son district.
