Plan International supports Vietnamese ethnic minority girls
PANO – The Plan International Vietnam officially started the project, "Protecting ethnic minority children from the COVID-19 pandemic", for Vietnamese children and people in different localities in Ha Giang, Lai Chau, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Kon Tum provinces.
The project aims to assist the Vietnamese Government in containing the disease and realizing its commitment that “no one is left behind”.
Accordingly, with a total budget of VND 16 billion, the project, which runs from April 1 to September 30, will directly support 32,000 sponsored children in 66 communes of 13 districts of the five provinces. These children are from ethnic minority groups in remote areas with language barriers and limited internet access. The project also supports 250,000 people in the community.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the lives of children, especially girls. The pandemic has forced 743 million girls in 188 countries out of school and caused an increase in the risk of mental health issues, family violence, online harassment, and exploitation.
Plan International's CEO Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen and 20 other leaders vowed to take action to protect children, especially girls, from the aggravated risks caused by COVID-19. Accordingly, Plan International with central and local partners and volunteers will launch projects to support clinics and schools in terms of both facilities and capacity building for staff. It will accelerate information dissemination to ensure that ethnic minority children and their families have access to reliable sources of information.
Plan International is a humanitarian organization with 80 years of working experience. It is operating in more than 75 countries around the world to promote girls' rights.
In Vietnam, Plan International started its operation in the Northern and Central regions in 1993. The organization has focused on children and youths, especially adolescent girls, developing them as physically and mentally strong people so that they are able to make their own decisions for their future. Plan International’s plan is helping 2 million girls in Vietnam, so they can learn, lead, decide, and thrive by 2022.
