Although floods have passed in Van Hoa commune, Tuyen Hoa (Quang Binh), local people have recently received more than 6,000 articles of clothing and dozens of towels, mosquito nets, school bags, sandals. However, it is surprising to know that those commodities were collected by two students of Bo Trach High School No3.

“Cu Son”, “Cu Viet” are what people in Thanh Khe village and around Thanh Khe market (Thanh Trach, Bo Trach) call them as very intimate names.

Now in their last year in high school, the two students patiently collected old goods from people to support those were stricken by the recent flood in the province.

“Hearing the news in the mass media that floods took away all the property, we wanted to do something. However, with only 100,000 VND, we could not do much; therefore, we decided to go house-to-house to collect old stuff of families,” they said.

At the beginning, they went to the market with the hope of collecting more in this crowded place; however, it was the first time they did such business so both of them were very shy.

“They were afraid at first but after knowing their plan which is aimed to help people in difficult situation in Tuyen Hoa, everyone supported them,” said Mai, a seller in Thanh Khe market.

They went to collect any useful thing during the day time and then in evening they sorted them into different bags: for men, for women, for children, for adults.

Many clothes were still good but had lost some buttons or had broken threads. Seeing that, Son and Viet spared no effort to repair them day and night. They also washed them when they were dirty. Viet’s mother also helped the kids to prepare the work.

As of the new school year, besides more than 6,000 articles of clothing, Son and Viet had also collected various goods like school bags, mosquito nets, shoes and sandals.

“They silently did the work so we did not know. Not until goods had been stored full in their house were we informed about that,” said Secretary of the Bo Trach Youth Union Nguyen Duc Ninh.

Son and Viet said: “After finishing the collection work, we did not know what to do next. That is why we had to ask for help from the Youth Union.”

“The union then immediately rented a van and sent a group of youths to accompany Son and Viet to Van Hoa commune. Many local people can not help staring at the two young boys with emotion, respect and gratitude,” Ninh added.

After the flood, such timely donations are invaluable to people in flood areas who have lost all their property.
