Da Lat’s rack railway upgraded
PANO - Bach Dang Hotel Complex Service & Trading JSC has proposed the Ministry of Transport to allow the company to restore the Da Lat - Thap Cham railway system, under a public-private partnership model at a cost of up to VND 17 trillion.
The Da Lat - Thap Cham railway system was constructed in 1908 with a total length of 84km, including 34km of toothed rack rail to help trains run uphill and downhill. The railway started operating from 1936.
The one-meter-gauge rail track allows for a designed speed of 60km/h on flat sections and 30km/h on serrated ones.
However, many sections of the Da Lat - Thap Cham railway were damaged during the war in Vietnam in the 1960s.
Currently a seven-kilometer section from Da Lat Station to Trai Mat Station has been restored to serve tourists.
