Vietnam ready to engage with U.S. on fisheries issue for fair, sustainable trade: Spokesperson
Vietnam stands ready to discuss with the U.S. to further promote equitable and sustainable bilateral trade as well as the legitimate interests of people and businesses of both sides, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang has said.

Hang made the statement at the ministry’s regular press conference on September 25 as she responded to a reporter’s query on Vietnam’s solutions to the recent decision by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to deny comparability findings for 12 Vietnamese fisheries under the US Marine Mammal Protection Act. Accordingly, imports from the affected fisheries will be prohibited starting January 1, 2026.
The diplomat stated that Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien on September 15 sent a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, calling on the U.S. Department of Commerce and NOAA to reconsider the decision. She stressed that the request aimed to prevent serious disruptions to the bilateral trade and safeguard the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese fishermen and workers.
Over the recent past, under the direction of the Government and with support from local authorities, Vietnam’s fisheries sector has made efforts in modernization, raised the sense of responsibility, and strengthened management, she underscored.
In light of the Vietnam – U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Vietnam is ready to talk with the U.S. to resolve the remaining obstacles, Hang said.
