The Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Commission (ExCom SEANWFZ) was held in Medan, North Sumatra of Indonesia on Sept. 12.
The meeting considered results of the direct consultations between ASEAN and the Nuclear Weapon States (NWS) held in Geneva, Switzerland, from August 8-10, including the process of submitting the Resolution on the SEANWFZ Treaty to the 66th UN General Assembly.
The meeting also discussed preparations for the next Foreign Ministerial Meeting of the SEANWFZ Commission, which will be held in New York on September 24 on the sidelines of the 66th UN General Assembly.
This foreign ministerial meeting will take place before further direct consultations between ASEAN and the NWS in the first week of October.
The Medan meeting issued ASEAN's recommendations on the settlement of pending issues related to the SEANWFZ Treaty and the accession of NWS to the Protocol to the Treaty, for further consideration and decisions by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers at the SEANWFZ Commission.
