The Overseas Vietnamese Liaison Association on February 24 held its second congress for the 2007-2010 term with the participation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem and 300 delegates.
Speaking at the congress, Mr Khiem expressed appreciation for the Association’s practical activities over the past years and hope that it will continue to function as a bridge between overseas Vietnamese and compatriots in the home country and encourage intellectuals living abroad to make greater contributions to national construction and development.
The Association should join hands with the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Education and Training to promote propaganda activities and teach Vietnamese language for overseas Vietnamese children, Mr Khiem said.
The Government always praises the Association’s role in coordinating with ministries and sectors throughout the country to effectively implement policies towards the overseas Vietnamese community. The Foreign Ministry will provide financial support for the Association to encourage more contributions from overseas Vietnamese.
Delegates agreed to elect former Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Bui Manh Hai as president of the Association’s 73-member Central Committee.
