Heavy snowfall hit several parts of northern Vietnam on January 24.

Snow began flurrying at Ba Vi National Park at 6 a.m, when the temperature was -3 degrees Celsius.

Covering Ba Vi, Thach That, and Quoc Oai districts in Hanoi and Luong Son, Ky Son districts in Hoa Binh province, the park boasts some mountains more than 1,000 metres above the sea level.

No animals were reported to have died due to the severe weather, according to Deputy Director of the park Do Thanh Hung.

The same day, snow also fell in Hang Kia and Pa Co communes in Mai Chau district of Hoa Binh province.

Meanwhile, Bac Yen, Van Ho, Moc Chau districts in Son La province recorded temperatures of -5 to -7 degrees Celsius on January 23 and 24. They are expected to continue to plummet.

Many residential areas and streets were coated with blankets of snow.

Authorities in these provinces have asked locals to take measures to protect their cattle from the cold spell.
