The visit to Vietnam by Speaker of the Micronesian Congress Isaac V. Figir will usher in a new period of development in the relationship between the two countries and the two legislative bodies, says National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong.
While receiving Speaker Isaac V. Figir in Hanoi on January 8, Mr Trong said he hopes the two legislative bodies will further promote their ties in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks.
He suggested more visits of parliamentarians be exchanged regularly and at different levels in order to strengthen the legislative relationship.
Regarding economic ties, Vietnam and Micronesia can increase cooperation in the fisheries, tourism, trade, agriculture, and environmental protection based on each country’s own strength, NA Chairman Trong said.
The Micronesian Congress Speaker said his first visit to Vietnam aimed to enhance the legislative and people-to-people ties.
He said Micronesia is strong in offshore fishing so he hoped to establish cooperation with Vietnam in the field.
The Micronesian guest also said he hopes the visit will help him explore Vietnamese culture and cooperation opportunities as well as studying Vietnam’s experiences in national construction and development. He invited the Vietnamese NA leader to visit Micronesia.
Later on the day, the Micronesian Congress Speaker and his entourage were feted by NA Chairman Trong at the Government Guest House.
The Speaker of the Micronesian Congress arrived in Vietnam on January 5 and is due to leave on January 14.
