Tran Quoc Toan, SAMCO general director, said the buses were part of a project to manufacture 300 CNG buses, assigned by the municipal People's Committee.
CNG buses are environment-friendly and suitable for public transport in modern urban areas, Toan added.
At the event, Huynh Thanh Dat, deputy director of Vietnam National University-HCM City said that bus route No.33 will help 30,000 students and university's staff travel to school.
The cooperative spent VND 63 billion (USD 2.83 million) to buy 23 of the total 52 CNG buses, according to Nguyen Van Trieu, director of the May 19 Transport Co-operative.
Le Hoang Minh, deputy director of the HCM City Transport Department, said the city was implementing a project to invest in 1,680 new buses to replace 1,318 old buses on routes that began 13 years ago.
Minh has told the co-operative to increase the quality of customer service, especially staff attitude towards customers.
