PANO - The Viet Minh Front - full name "Viet Nam Doc Lap Dong Minh Hoi" (League for the Independence of Vietnam) - was founded by President Ho Chi Minh and the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) on May 19th 1941. Its functions were to gather Vietnamese people and create a combined strength to fight against Japanese fascists and French colonists.

Since its establishment, Viet Minh had always been a united organization with a mission to unite party organizations, ethnic minority groups, religions, and people of all walks of life - as well as to promote patriotism, revolutionary spirit, and the will to fight for national independence and freedom.

The Vietnam Armed Unit for National Liberation was founded on December 22nd, 1944

At the 8th meeting of the Central Party Committee in May 1941, the CPV stressed the organization's significant role in cultivating national spirit among people. This was also displayed along with the development of the Front. Seventy-five years ago, the organization's target was unifying all social classes to create a combined strength to drive all invaders out of the country, gain national independence, and build the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Under the leadership of Viet Minh, various social and political organizations were set up, serving the Vietnamese revolution against colonialism at that time.

Right after its foundation, the organization issued 10 policies which displayed determination to debate French invaders and win independence for the country. The policies were then amended and more appropriate contents added, given the particular circumstances.

Through mid-1945, the organization gathered over 5 million members.  5,000 of them were members of the Party. They became the main force contributing to the August Revolution victory in August 1945.

President Ho Chi Minh led the revolution to its highest peak as he gave birth to the Vietnam Democratic Republic on September 2nd, 1945. Under the leadership of President Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam’s revolution overcame numerous difficulties and challenges to succeed. He always stressed that the revolutionary cause belongs to the people and must be carried out by the people.

Viet Minh bore different names in different periods, and it is now the Vietnam Fatherland Front. But it has always fulfilled its historical mission to gather and unite people from all walks of life to defeat all aggressors threatening the cause of national construction and defense. The national great unity bloc remains a key factor in ensuring the success of the renewal process and national industrialization and modernization. National unity will contribute to building a rich people, a strong country, and an equitable, democratic, and civilized society, as President Ho Chi Minh wished.
