At the event, the organizing panel received around 80 reports from leaders and former leaders of military regions, army corps, services, arms, academies, schools, institutes, historical witnesses, and scientists inside and outside the military. Reports clearly pointed out the achievements as well as shortcomings in the campaign.
Delegates at the seminar recalled that 50 years ago on April 1, under the leadership of the Party Central Committee, the Central Military Commission, the Central Office for South Vietnam, and Regional Command, troops and people in southeastern region launched Nguyen Hue Campaign.
After ten months, the campaign ended with success, annihilating a large number of enemy’s troops, destroying many vehicles of Saigon troops, and liberating many strategic areas. The victory of the campaign greatly contributed to the success of the Strategic Offensive in 1972 and went down in the history as a heroic event of the Eastern battlefield in the cause of national liberation and reunification.
Speaking at the seminar, Senior Lieutenant General Le Huy Vinh affirmed that the success of Nguyen Hue Campaign resulted from the creative application of political and military guidelines of the Party, President Ho Chi Minh’s thought about military work, and Vietnam’s military art.
According to the deputy defense minister, the victory demonstrated the willpower, intelligence, the “Determined to fight and determined to win” spirit, bravery, and creativeness of the Vietnamese people and troops.
During the seminar, delegates also named important factors that contributed to the victory of Nguyen Hue Campaign, affirmed the significance of victory to the resistance war against American imperialists for national salvation, drew valuable lessons and experience to successfully carry out the two strategic tasks of building and firmly protecting socialism.
