The units include Military Regions 5, 7 and 9, the Vietnam Border Guard, the Navy, the Air Defense and Air Force Service and the Vietnam Coast Guard.
Accordingly, these military units were asked to attentively follow the storm’s developments, ensure safety and structural integrity of their barracks and stores, as well as safeguard locals and activities of the 2017 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Da Nang City.
Previously, the units collaborated with local authorities to guide fishermen to take refuge from the storm and to prepare forces and vehicles for all necessary search and rescue mission.
As many as 132,000 people, including 42,604 troops, 68,859 militiamen, 21,408 civilians and 4,271 vehicles were mobilized for this mission.
* The same day, the Military Region 5 Command held a conference to brace their forces for Storm Damrey.
Under the order of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, the military region command directed its units to maintain troops and equipment on 24-hour stand-by, follow the storm’s path and the downpour’s developments, and set up realistic plans to help reduce casualties to locals and minimize damage in localities.
According to Senior Colonel Le Van Huy, Head of the Search and Rescue Department of Military Region 5, by Nov. 2, the military region mobilized 10,309 troops, 33,864 militiamen, 250 cars, and 150 boats to cope with the upcoming storm to minimize possible losses to lives or property.
