General Staff gathers former officers in the North
PANO - The General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army held a meeting on August 30 in Hanoi with its retired officers and troops in Northern Vietnam in commemoration of its 72nd founding anniversary (September 7).

Lieutenant General Phan Van Giang, Chief of the General Staff and Deputy Minister of National Defense, chaired the meeting. Present at the event were former Politburo members: General Le Duc Anh, the former State President; General Pham Van Tra, former Minister of National Defense; General Phung Quang Thanh, former Minister of National Defense; and Vu Oanh, former member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee and former Chief of the Office of the Ministry of National Defense. Other participants included former Deputy Ministers of National Defense; incumbent and former Deputy Chiefs of the General Staff; veteran revolutionaries; heroes of the People’s Armed Forces; and other former senior officers of the General Staff’s affiliated units.
At the meeting, General Giang informed the delegates of the recent situation in the world, the country, the army and the General Staff. He emphasized that the General Staff is continuing to perform well in its advisory function and in directing the implementation of military and defense missions, the observance of duty regulations on combat readiness at all levels and in handling all related circumstances.
With its close direction, affiliated units have improved their quality of training, regularity, military discipline and observance of the law to meet the requirements of building up the army and safeguarding the nation in the current context.
The General Staff has fulfilled its external defense affair missions in line with the guidelines and policies on external relations by the Party, State, and Ministry of National Defense. Furthermore, it has continued to build itself into a comprehensively strong unit with unity and a firm political stance.
General Giang hoped its former staff members will continue the unit’s tradition so as to be capable enough of accomplishing all assigned missions.
